Luna (and her little brother) continued to grow and learn. They both went to school and the church’s after-school program. Mama stopped working at the dump after being offered a job as a cook at the church’s feeding program.
Life looked a lot brighter, but it wasn’t always easy. Sometimes Luna had to miss school to care for her brother while Mama worked. One time, Mama got very sick, and the family had to move in with another family. But through it all, they trusted God would provide.
When the time came for Luna to apply for nursing school, one big obstacle lay in her way. There was simply no money. But then Pastor José told Luna about a scholarship she could receive to learn how to sew professionally. After being trained, she earned money sewing in a factory and paid to attend nursing school.
This allowed Luna to return to the community that cared for her when she was a hungry, hopeless little girl. Now she helps at-risk moms and children, just like Sofia, the nurse who inspired her.
How do children in poverty find brighter futures?
