LIfe-Advancing Programs

Providing job and training opportunities for young men and women of Nicaragua.

MISSION 14® JOB TRAINING PROGRAM

The Mission 14 Sewing School offers young adults from partner Local Church Initiatives training opportunities to obtain jobs that will help them to break the cycle of poverty.

We proudly partner with Mission 14 to create job opportunities in the garment manufacturing industry.

THESE CORE LIFE-ADVANCING PROGRAMS SHATTER CYCLES OF POVERTY BY CREATING RESILIENT AND FRUITFUL YOUTH WHO ARE EDUCATED, SPIRITUALLY MATURE, DEPENDABLE, CAPABLE AND OPTIMISTIC.

Sewing Skills Job Training Program

One of Nicaragua’s major industries includes textiles and garment manufacturing. The very successful partnership with Mission 14 enables young people to be trained as sewing operators that immediately increases their personal income by at least 5 times.

Technical classes take five weeks to complete inclusive of life skills training in conflict resolution, budgeting, interview skills and resume preparation. Class size typically includes 15 – 20 students.

SEWING MACHINE MECHANICS TRAINING COURSE

Developed in 2022 by our partners at Mission 14, this course provides highly sought-after sewing machine repair skills previously unavailable in-country. The Mechanics jobs can pay 2 to 3 times the rate of a sewing machine operator.

These technical classes take 12 weeks to complete and are inclusive of foundational learning of production tools, processes and the life skills noted above.

HOME & COMMUNITY GARDENS

A critical capability to instill and enable is the creation of a reliable food supply. Home and community gardens have proven to be a reliable avenue to inspire meal stability, a source of barter and self-confidence. Sourcing seeds and aligning crops to appropriate growing seasons has all been part of the training and enablement process.

This past year, over 150 gardens supported sustainable farming practices.

MISSION 14®

Nick and Sandi Cienski (Maryland), were inspired to start Mission 14® after an ORPHANetwork mission trip with their church in 2011. Nick, Founder/Owner of Kyur designs technically advanced medical apparel. The couple was touched by the care for at-risk children in communities of abject poverty and they envisioned providing a way to break cycles of poverty by teaching a few mothers how to make and sew shirts locally.

Today, Mission 14® is providing impoverished families a way out of poverty through an innovative sewing training center in Managua, Nicaragua.

When speaking about the hundreds of jobs that have been created over the past few years, Cienski said, “Our focus was never just to teach; our focus was to try and break the cycle of poverty that exists in this place.” Cienski continued, “For us it was always about jobs.”
