History

Bluefields is an urban port city on Nicaragua’s Southeast Coast. Before the Somoza regime and Sandinista revolution, Bluefields was a thriving port city with a bustling downtown area. Today it is a poor, urban area with shopkeepers, commercial fishing enterprises and hundreds of impoverished street kids.

Today Verbo has a thriving church in Bluefields with 300 members and a K-12 school with more than 400 students. The church and school sit on 180 acres of property. Ed Jaentschke, Pastor of the Verbo Church in Bluefields, has a heart to minister to vulnerable and abandoned street kids.

In 2006 ORPHANetwork began partnering with Pastor Ed and his team to launch a sustained ministry effort to street children. We received a $10,000 grant from a private family foundation toward the project. The fund allowed us to secure a lease and begin renovating a building that would serve as a feeding center for street kids. We were able to add a full-working kitchen to the property, install a water tank, obtain furniture and have funding in place for operating expenses including food and utilities. Verbo opened a full-time feeding center at the site in Spring of 2007. In addition, in June 2009, Verbo ministries opened a new feeding center, which fed over 90 kids in its first week.

Current Status of Ministry

Currently Verbo is using the feeding center as a safe place where 45 street children can connect with caring, Christian adults and receive a hot, nutritious lunch each day. Verbo is currently working with Mi Familia to become a state-recognized and certified orphanage. This process will take at least a year to complete.

ORPHANetwork is providing $1,000 per month to support the feeding center. In order to keep the facility open and serve meals to at-risk children, we obtained a large donation of soy-fortified rice in May 2008. The rice has 11 grams of protein per serving and is packed with vitamins. We have enough rice to feed all 45 kids one meal daily for one year.
