Emmanuel’s Remarkable Story

Emmanuel lives with his mother and extended family in a tiny home in the former refugee community of Nueva Vida. He was born with a congenital deformity in his upper and lower limbs. When we first met Emmanuel on the steps of our dental clinic in 2012, he was just three years old. We learned he had once received a pair of leg braces from a visiting surgeon to the public hospital in Managua. However, when the surgeon left the program at the hospital ended.

ORPHANetwork Medical Director, Dr. Janice Hebbert, has helped this family throughout their journey. She remarks, “it has been a great blessing to be able to continue to help this young boy; to be a witness of God’s love and his power through science.”

Today, Emmanuel is eight years old and has been through eight surgeries – six on his hands and two on his legs and tons of physical therapy. The leg braces he was recently fitted with are expected to correct the curvature of his legs within two years! We are honored to create new opportunities for life for Emmanuel, his mother and each of the 22,000 children we serve.

Penny Challenge Raises $2,300 for Books!

Each of our eleven After School Education Programs (ASEP) needs a mini-library of books to support the children’s pursuit of fundamental reading skills.  In one week, the children at Eisenhower Elementary in Jacksonville, IL raised $2,300 to help purchase books for our kids in Nicaragua! At a cost of $1,200 per mini-library their awesome work supplied two ASEPs with much needed books for their mini-libraries!

Feeling inspired to help a child in Nicaragua learn to read through our After School Education Program? You can launch a peer-to-peer fundraiser and help purchase books for mini-libraries too! Click here to learn more!

Blessing Mothers and Children through the Local Church

Yuneysi  has been attending the new Local Church Initiative (LCI) in La Dalia, Matagalpa for five months. This is what her mother, Yenling, shared about their experience so far :

As her mom I feel blessed because there are people who care about the children of the community. As her parents we did not have the money to provide a very nutritious meal to our daughter, just the basics (rice and beans). The medical team is often visiting the children so we are very lucky to have free medical care for our kids too. Read More
